Let's contribute our share in addressing climate change

A bill that seeks to institutionalize a legal framework for climate loss and damage accountability has been filed in the House of Representatives.

The measure — the proposed Climate Accountability (CLIMA) Act — seeks to institute policies and systems to address climate change, protect communities from climate change-induced losses, damages, and human rights harms, and provide mechanisms for accountability and reparations from those responsible for worsening the climate crisis, including corporate interests such as the fossil fuel industry.

The dependence on, and the excessive use of fossil fuels, like coal, oil, and gas, have exacerbated climate change. In fact, the burning of fossil fuels has been the main driver of climate change as they produce heat-trapping gases — or what are called greenhouse gases — that cause global warming.

As former United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-moon once said, "The clear and present danger of climate change means we cannot burn our way to prosperity...."

Championing the Philippine halal economy for greater prosperity

BEYOND BUDGET by Amenah F. Pangandaman, DBM Secretary

I was privileged to speak during the Philippine Halal Economy Festival organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Nov. 22, 2023. As the only woman Muslim Cabinet member and a proud daughter of Mindanao, I expressed my appreciation for being given the honor to be with my Muslim brothers and sisters as well as halal advocates at this event that recognizes our culture, tradition, and way of life.

As I highlighted during my speech, I champion going halal and assure my unequivocal support for the initiative. Halal is more than just a dietary restriction in observance of the faith. It also provides an understanding of Islam, the world's second-largest religion which was brought to the Philippines 643 years ago. This fosters a deeper appreciation of the Muslim culture which promotes peace and consequently, progress.

Andres Bonifacio as 'typical Filipino'

THE VIEW FROM RIZAL by Dr. Jun Ynares

One of the unresolved "debates" in academic and historical circles – and even among ordinary Filipinos is this: Who should be our national hero – Dr. Jose Rizal or Andres Bonifacio?

Several scholarly writers who have tackled the subject matter have done us great service by explaining to us the contrast between the two revered Filipinos. Most of us have already mastered the differences. Bonifacio was a revolutionary; Rizal was a reformist. Bonifacio believed in the armed struggle; Rizal was a pacifist. Bonifacio came from a humble family; Rizal was born into a family of wealth and means. Bonifacio did not enjoy the benefits of higher education; Rizal had access to higher education here and abroad.

How do we end violence against women and children?

NIGHT OWL by Anna Mae Lamentillo

Is it really possible to have a world without violence? Can we really end violence against women and children?

According to the 2022 National Demographic and Health Survey by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), one in five women who have ever had an intimate partner have experienced physical, sexual, or emotional violence by their current or most recent husband/intimate partner. Moreover, 12 percent of those women experienced such violence in the 12 months preceding the survey.

This is the reality even after two decades of the Philippines' participation in the global campaign to end violence against women (VAW).

From Nov. 25 to Dec. 12 of every year, the Philippines observes the 18-day Campaign to End Violence against Women and Children.

Have bicycle, will commute

OFF THE BEATEN PATH by Atty. Gregorio Larrazabal

Last weekend, several cities in the Philippines celebrated World Bicycle Day by having events with cyclists. This is a very welcome development, which I hope provides a push in the right direction with encouraging more people to get into cycling again.

During the pandemic, there was a significant increase in people getting into cycling. Either as a way to commute, due to travel restrictions. Or for recreation, when travel was severely restricted, especially for international travel. Many took to cycling as a viable alternative.

Unfortunately, when the travel restrictions were lifted, there was a large drop in people regularly using their bicycles. Instead of wanting to take bike rides around town or the provinces, many took vacations in places they weren't able to visit during the long lockdowns.

What is the use of Bonifacio today?

OF TREES AND FOREST by Former Senate President Manny Villar

This piece should come out a day before the 160th birth anniversary of Gat Andres Bonifacio — national hero, revolutionary, Tondo boy — and two days after the official celebration of Bonifacio Day (government decided to move it earlier in accordance with its policy of holiday economics). The title of this article might seem too utilitarian to some but it is a question asked by millions of young Filipinos reading about his life, other heroes, and the history of the Philippines.

That was, in fact, the same question I asked when I was in elementary school and well into high school. Why are we studying dead men, and events that happened decades ago? Will I be able to use these later in life? Bonifacio, Jose Rizal, Gregorio del Pilar, and other heroes lived in a different time and in completely different circumstances.
