Protect the environment at all costs

Environmental protection is of paramount concern to the government.

Apart from various laws and policies on the protection of the environment, the Supreme Court issued a continuing mandamus on Dec. 18, 2008, directing key government agencies "to clean up, rehabilitate, and preserve Manila Bay, and restore and maintain its waters to SB level (Class B sea waters per Water Classification Tables under DENR Administrative Order No. 34 [1990]) to make them fit for swimming, skin-diving, and other forms of contact recreation" to deter unabated abuse of the popular body of water that play a key role in our ecosystem.

Now comes the Green Justice Zone, the first of its kind launched in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, on Nov. 10, 2023. It is aimed at having a strong collaboration between the national government and the local government units for the efficient and effective delivery of justice in environmental protection and natural resource management.

True essence of unity: President BBM's love and respect for Muslims and Mindanao

BEYOND BUDGET by Amenah F. Pangandaman, DBM Secretary

As a proud Mindanaoan and the only Muslim woman in President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s (PBBM's) Cabinet, I was privileged to personally go to Simunul, Tawi-Tawi to witness the celebration of the 643rd Anniversary of Sheikh Karimul Makhdum Day on Nov. 7, 2023. I was overjoyed to be one with my Muslim brothers and sisters to honor Sheikh Makhdum, whom we revere and thank for bringing Islam, the first-recorded monotheistic religion in the Philippines and the second-largest religion in the country, with almost seven million Filipinos practicing the faith.

The celebration was highlighted by the unveiling of the historical marker for the Sheikh Makhdum Mosque and its turnover from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).

Why we must revive writing in the vernacular

NIGHT OWL by Anna Mae Lamentillo

Culture is an inherent part of an individual's identity; and an integral part of culture is language, which is vital for human connection, building relationships, and creating a sense of community.

All over the world, there are about 7,000 languages, half of which are already endangered, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

When a language vanishes, a whole system of traditional knowledge and beliefs intertwined with that language ceases with it. What is then left of the entire heritage that lived on that language and culture, their history and beliefs, their contribution to society and civilization?

There are efforts to save dying languages and to prevent such from happening to other native tongues.

Beware the deadly mosquitoes

CLINICAL MATTERS by Dr. Edsel Salvana

Mosquito-borne diseases is a continuing health threat to Filipinos

Living in the tropics, most Filipinos are familiar with the two big mosquito-borne illnesses – dengue and malaria. But there are many other infectious diseases borne by mosquitoes that infect a significant number of Filipinos every year. These diseases include Chinkungunya, Zika, Japanese encephalitis, and lymphatic filariasis. Being aware of these diseases is worthwhile since they can happen to anyone especially when living or traveling in known hotspots for these illnesses.

Dengue is hyperendemic in the Philippines. That means it is transmitted the whole year round, although there are some seasonal increases especially during the rainy season. There are four serotypes of dengue which means that a person can get infected up to four times in their lifetime.

Honoring Laguna de Bay

THE VIEW FROM RIZAL by Dr. Jun Ynares

Last week, the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) celebrated its 54th anniversary.

It was a privilege to become part of the agency, having served as its general manager twice, although just for short periods. I was glad because the celebration focused on a body of water that plays a crucial role in the lives of the people living in the province of Rizal – a privilege they share with the residents of the province of Laguna and the National Capital Region.

The occasion was also an opportunity to reiterate the important place that Laguna de Bay has in our past and our present.

In our past columns, we underscored this: Laguna de Bay has served many inspirational and practical purposes.

Upping the ante in the WPS saga

FINDING ANSWERS by Former Senator Atty. Joey D. Lina

The suggestion of Sen. Francis Tolentino to recall the Philippine Ambassador to China as a way of expressing our country's protest against China's harassment in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) deserves serious consideration.

This is us telling them that you've really gone overboard, to take notice because we have already filed hundreds of diplomatic protests," Sen. Tolentino said in a radio interview on Sunday. But he stressed that it would not mean the Philippines was cutting diplomatic ties with China.

The latest incident according to a statement of the National Task Force-West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS), occurred last Nov. 10 when Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) and Chinese militia vessels "recklessly harassed, blocked, and executed dangerous maneuvers... at Ayungin Shoal."
