Massive quake on New Year's Day

Our top story this week is the magnitude 7.6 earthquake that struck central Japan on Jan. 1, triggering tsunami warnings for residents to evacuate affected coastal areas. Nearly 100 casualties were reported as of this writing, and no Filipinos were harmed, officials say.

PH gov't debt bloated

Next up is the government's outstanding debt reaching a new record high in Nov. 2023, which was driven by rising borrowing costs and high inflation. Bureau of Treasury data shows that the state's total debt burden reached P14.51 trillion in Nov. 2023.
