MILLIONS AFFECTED

Carina, 'habagat'

The Super Typhoon Carina-enhanced southwest monsoon brought heavy to intense rainfall to Metro Manila and different parts of Luzon over the past week, prompting a declaration of a state of calamity in the Philippine capital due to heavy flooding.

Carina, along with the previous tropical cyclone Butchoy, affected more than 1.3 million people nationwide, according to a report issued by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

The United States, Australian, Chinese, and Canadian embassies in Manila have offered assistance, with US Ambassador MaryKay Carlson stating that coordination between the embassy and the Philippine government is ongoing.

Amid the inclement weather in Metro Manila and other parts of the archipelago, Vice President Sara Duterte and members of her family left the country for an unannounced trip to Germany early Wednesday.

Coming to the vice president's defense, Sen. Imee Marcos defended Duterte, saying, "Matagal na 'yung plano at hindi naman niya alam na may bagyo." Despite her absence, Duterte's office was still able to extend assistance to affected areas, said Marcos.

However, for Rep. Edcel Lagman, Duterte's "lack of empathy" is appalling since many parts of the nation are "reeling in a state of emergency." Lagman said Duterte should have let her family go on the trip without her and prioritized her duties in the country.
